A WEEK SURFING IN CAPE TOWN
South Africa
Big Bay is situated about 20 min drive from Cape Town. The setting is for a relaxed and quiet atmosphere, away from the traffic and noise. Big Bay has two little ”islands” which can be reached at low tide, and by SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard). Sitting right opposite the famous Robben Island, Big Bay is home to many restaurants and bars, coffee and surf shops all open until late, and is a place where people love to sip cocktails as the sun sets over the Atlantic ocean.

The wave here is a windy beach break popular with kite and windsurfers. The ‘A’ – frame wave breaks on the outside, then reforms before hitting the shorebreak. Sometimes there are good banks here, depending on the sandbars. During the summer months, the south easterly wind blows hard on a daily basis, turning Big Bay into a world class playground; surfing and SUPs are mainly active in the calmer morning times while afternoons are characterised by hundreds of kite and windsurfers making their way to the water.
”Slow down, it’s Cape Town.” – there is no rush, and no hurry. Each day is planned with activities, but there is no formal agenda, and each person is free to decide what of the activities they would like to join.
