A DAY WITH WHALES IN SOUTH AFRICA
Annually, from roughly June to December, Hermanus is known as a mecca for Whale Watching. Southern Right and Humpback Whales choose the area to mate and give birth. Trips depart from the local harbour and head out to sea to observe these beautiful mammals. One can also expect to see Bryde’s Whales, which reside in the temperate waters of South Africa.
The Whales can be approached to a distance of approximately 50 m, so you get right up close and personal. While the distance is close, it is far enough for the animals to behave naturally in their natural habitat. Being naturally curious, the Whales often swim right up to the boat, so close that you can smell their breath!
Watch them in action as they breach and play in the waters around the boat. Learn more about these magnificent animals through our experienced Whale ?Watching guides .
The whale watching trip begins with an on-land briefing presented by our whale specialist guide before heading down the jetty to our catamaran. We then set off from the Hermanus New Harbour in search of the ‘gentle giants.’
We will approach the whales up to 50m and then we stop to observe, it is then up to the whales to come closer. Being naturally curious, the whales often come right up to the boat.
During the tour our friendly, knowledgeable crew adds that personal touch to ensure an all-round great experience, from ensuring you don’t miss the perfect photo opportunities to serving complimentary light refreshments. Our Whale Specialist guide will interpret the marine life encountered en route and provide insight into the behaviour of the whales while you are watching them in action.
